The London uniform I saw everywhere … get the look!
I just returned from a ten day work trip to London for some meetings, business brainstorming, trend shopping and people watching. These trips are fun and inspiring, and I always return home on idea overload, excited to share everything with you 😊 While eating dinner at the Chiltern Firehouse, trend shopping in Notting Hill and sipping tea in Selfridges, I suddenly realized that everywhere I looked, all the cool girls were wearing a “uniform!” Yep, they all had some version of this outfit, so I thought I’d write about it.
What’s the London Uniform? Well, it’s a long wool coat, denim, black boots, a scarf and a posh designer handbag (everything from YSL to Chanel to Gucci). And, the interesting thing about this outfit is it’s the obvious go-to for a daily outfit. Not only is it practical, but it’s also stylish and comfortable. And how do you get this look? Easy! Since many of us already own faded denim, just find a classic wool coat, add a great sweater and black boots, a cozy scarf and a handbag you love, and it will be the perfect “uniform” to wear all winter long!

For the first part of the trip, we stayed at the Ham Yard Hotel. It was a lovely place to stay, beautifully designed and in a great location. After my girlfriend went back to Portland, I wanted to try the Chiltern Firehouse in the Marylebone neighborhood — and I absolutely loved it. Highly recommend! I’ll be sharing more on these amazing boutique hotels in a future post, so stay tuned 😉
Marylebone shopping favorites
Matches Fashion – Liked this tray, perfect for gifts for the entertainer in your life
Sézane – There was a line around the corner every day, which made me feel like I needed to go in the store, but I didn’t want to wait. I’ll shop online instead 🙂

I spent time exploring several different neighborhoods, including the Chelsea area, Marylebone and Notting Hill. It was exciting, and for a quick minute, I felt less like a tourist and more like a true Londoner! The weather was cool, and it was raining most of the time, but pretty much every stylish person was wearing the “uniform” you see above. The best part? This outfit is practical and easy to copy!
How to get the look!
Start with a coat
Everyone was wearing wool coats on the streets of London. There were belted styles, looser fits and slightly oversized ones as well. The coats were mostly black and gray, with some camel and lighter beige colors as well.
Add cool, updated denim
This is the key to keeping this look current. Funny enough, I saw many different styles, including lots of skinnies. There were long lengths, cropped lengths, skinnies, and looser styles, mostly lighter wash denim and plenty of black.
Wear a sweater underneath the coat
Most sweaters I noticed were all the same colors I mentioned above, and some striped versions too.
Black boots are the key to the whole look
Everywhere I looked, black boots (of varying styles) were on the fashion set. The styles I saw while wandering the streets of London were mostly practical, like Chelsea boots (similar to this), and cool-girl boots with a more elongated toe like the Toteme one or this J.Crew copy.
Finally, the two main accessories: a big scarf and a designer handbag
The scarves were mostly solid, chunky knitted styles. Occasionally I’d see a silky, more understated pattern. As for bags, mostly saw crossbody styles and some totes!
