6 pro-tips for easy, everyday outfits!

I think it’s safe to say that many of us want easy, everyday outfit combos. We’d like to confidently throw on a great outfit every morning, without having to think too much about it. However, accomplishing this can be tricky, especially if you like to shop and get easily sidetracked 😉 Who hasn’t experienced finding a cool new “something” and not really knowing how to wear it — but you buy it anyway? After I wrote about essentials here, many of you wanted to know how to make more outfits with what you already own. So, today’s post has 6 pro-tips for easy, everyday outfits!

So, here are a few style tricks that will help with easy outfit-making. We’re talking simple concepts, like wearing a matching top and jacket, or matching your accessories. You’ll find that as long as you own these essentials, the outfit possibilities are endless. Keep reading to see my brand new style boards using six easy pro-tips that I recommend from decades of experience in the dressing room … those were happy years for me!

Tip 1: Start with the right pant

As I always tell my clients and friends: the right bottom is the starting piece of every outfit. If you’ve been in “Room 3” with me, you might remember that we didn’t even get started until we found the best fitting jean, or trouser, or bottom half. Once that’s done, adding a simple, neutral shoe allows you to proceed with everything else! So, what is the “right” bottom? Something black! I know, it sounds boring, but trust me: this will make ALL your outfits work.

Here are the 4 top selling bottoms everyone loves:

Black pants – The newest style to add is a looser trouser. I love this pleated one, and I just added this non-pleated one to my wardrobe. The Frame trouser has been a go-to for a while, and it’s been updated with a size zipper which is even better. Spanx makes the best pants which you can read about in this post (look at this style and this style). For a knit style, I tried this style by Rag & Bone, and it’s a good one.

Black coated denim – Right now, I’m recommending longer length styles like this one by Frame and this one by Paige. Check out this recent post for more options and styling ideas.

Black denim – This season, I’m strongly leaning towards longer length jeans in wide leg or boot cut styles. This Rag & Bone Peyton is a favorite, and so is this Paige one. And, here’s one of my best tips: if you’re traveling anytime soon, this Frame Jetset jean in black is SO good! I have both the long and shorter lengths and have found them to be really comfortable. I do still like ankle crop styles, and between the Mother Hustler or these washed black ones by Citizens of Humanity – you’ll wear them all the time.

Black jogger – This Vuori Jogger is hands down the best! It makes tons of outfits and can be worn year ’round. If you don’t already own a pair, go ahead and get one — it’s never too late, and you’ll be happy you did!

2: Give your denim an update

Since denim is the backbone of our wardrobes, it’s important to have a well-fitting, current style that you feel really good in. Most of us probably have cropped versions by now, like the Mother Hustler, Insider or the Paige Claudine. But, finding something a little newer might give your wardrobe an update! Right now, I’m preferring longer lengths and styles, like the Rag & Bone Peyton, the Mother Weekender, and the Paige Genevieve.

3: Invest in quality staples … always

There are some things that are just worth the splurge, like a Veronica Beard blazer. I’m often asked for an affordable version, and I just found this one!! A nice black blouse (my favorite is this Frame one) and it works perfectly for both day and evening, same with a black pant (mentioned above). A neutral shoe is a must-have … and several pairs gives you more options. Here is a style board for inspo, and my top 8 staples that are worth the investment.

4: Match your top and bottom (one of the best tips)

J.Crew coat | Cream sweater | Mother denim | YSL bag | Loafers | Gucci scarf | Bracelet

A silky black cami, like this one, is one of my favorite things to wear. It works beautifully with most any bottom, and if you happen to love black, it’s an easy go-to when you’re getting dressed up. If you pair a matching top and bottom, then most jackets will look good and you’ll have outfits for days. Suggested pairs include black/black, cream/écru, white/white or gray/gray. Easy, quick and elegant!

5: Match your top and jacket

Camel coat | Camel sweater | Gucci bag | Gucci boots | Scarf | Mother denim

Matching your tops to your jackets is a trick that works with every kind of jacket. For example, the camel jacket and sweater combo above looks amazing with faded denim, as well as black, écru or gray denim. If you’re dressing up, just use a black pant.   Take the same concept and wear a black jacket and black tee with skirts, faded denim … you get the idea!

6: Coordinate your accessories

Here’s one of my favorite tips: neutral accessories are the perfect finishing touch to every outfit. So, if you can match or coordinate your accessories (by color or pattern), you’ll have dozens of easy outfits at your fingertips! So, try to put together a few sets: a bag/shoe combo, a bag/belt combo, or a scarf/bag/shoe combo in matching or coordinating colors. I love any accessory in a rich saddle brown, a lighter beige color, or black of course — that goes without saying!
