What’s the “third piece?” And why is it important?
A good friend recently asked me this Q: where do I start when refreshing a wardrobe? Well, I immediately came up with the following suggestion: start with the single, most important piece when creating outfits — the item we stylists refer to as the “third piece.” This is the key to every great outfit.
What is this “third piece” and why is it important? The third piece is basically a jacket of any kind: leather, denim, blazer, utility, cardigan, trench — you get the idea. Based on my personal experience, you should own several different styles for maximum versatility. Also, jackets tend to stay relevant longer, and they make such an impact on every outfit that I think they’re worth the investment.

Speaking of a wardrobe refresh, this past week I told my husband he needed an an update! 😂 Since we had two events in one week, I decided he was LONG OVERDUE for a cool and casual wardrobe. I actually used to help quite a few men during my Nordstrom Stylist days, but never my husband!! So, it got me thinking, which are the important pieces that men need? At the very end of this post, I’m including a bit about the two jackets we got for my husband. Who knows, maybe your guy needs a little update too! 😉

Utility jackets are wardrobe classics, and this $59 one is hands down a favorite — it’s one of the most purchased items on So Susie. I might have a bit of a denim jacket obsession, and for good reason!! They’re cool, and look good any time of year layered over your favorite dresses.

The blazer options are endless right now, and I’m loving all the pretty colors I spotted on the Nordstrom site. Look at this one and the pink is so pretty too. If you want the look of a blazer but want to feel a bit more comfy, this Rag & Bone is hands down a favorite, and it has just been re-stocked.

This Nordstrom cardigan has been a favorite for years, and I just noticed the new tan color, which is perfect going into warmer months. This linen blend cardigan is the style I wear all summer long, and it works nicely over denim and dresses, as well as for work. At $69 this is a total deal, and it was included in the Top 25 Favorites post I wrote this past weekend.
