I love working on articles with Who What Wear, and you can imagine how honored I am when asked for my “advice” on fashion and styles. Their commitment to the inclusion of women over 40 is inspiring, and it makes me even more proud to be affiliated with them! Recently, my friend Bobby Schuessler, the Senior Editor at WWW, asked me my thoughts on skinny jeans after noticing this Instagram post. He wanted to know which trends I’ll be wearing instead … and this is an interesting question!
After sorting through my closet the past couple of months, I’ve zeroed in on the denim trends I’ll be wearing this year. First and foremost, I believe we can wear whatever we want, whenever we want. But, I did mention that skinnies should scoot aside (for now). There are so many stylish new trends to try, why not update your denim with a fresh style or two? They can be simple updates, like longer length denim, and wide leg or even slim straight leg jeans that are the second cousins to skinny jeans! Because this seems to be such a controversial issue at the moment 😉, I put together my favorite denim trends from this recent WWW article. for you. Give them a try, you might find a style you really like!

A slim straight-leg jean is the easiest way to transition from a skinny jean. It’s only slightly wider at the leg opening, and is equally as versatile. Pretty much any style of shoe works, from boots to sneakers to strappy sandals. Specific ones I love include the Paige Cindy, Mother Dazzler (mid-rise), Frame Le High Straight and AG Mari. All best-sellers that work for almost everyone!

#2 Wide-leg jeans

A high-waisted, wider-length jean is super chic, and it’s ideal for both day and night. In the spring, I prefer a cropped style, but longer lengths are also stylish and fun. The wide-leg jean never really goes out of style — think of the ones your mom used to wear! Too bad we didn’t raid the closet back then 😂

A slim jean with a slight flare is a good option for a wider flare, and it’s equally as flattering. Whether you prefer a longer length or a cropped style, this is another skinny-jean alternative. I love wearing mine with strappy sandals and a pretty blouse—perfect for any night out.

#4 White jeans

White jeans often need a refresh, and if you wear them all the time, you’ll feel like they were worth it! I find the Frame white denim, Mother and Paige are the best ones. The pockets sometimes do show, which makes them a little tricky, but I tend to ignore it and wear them anyway 🙂

This isn’t for everyone, but I love a bit of light distressing — it adds a little edge to a simple outfit. Distressed denim is a matter of personal preference, but if you like it, go for it!

Flare jeans, like the ones I’m wearing in the picture, really elongate your legs! (At 5’1″ I’ll take anything I can get 😉) I was in L.A. recently and noticed them everywhere. Pro top: when it comes to alterations on flares, it doesn’t affect the flare by shortening it a bit. I get asked that question a lot!
