How to build a modern Fall capsule wardrobe — all new!

Now is the perfect time to review your essentials and get your closet organized! A solid wardrobe foundation makes getting dressed easy and effortless, and also helps you be prepared for any occasion. There has been a lot of chatter about capsule wardrobes lately, because if it’s not done right, it can come off a little … boring. This is why I’m going to share my recommendations on how to build a modern, Fall capsule wardrobe. This wardrobe should be comprised of sophisticated, elevated, versatile pieces. When these pieces are combined, they make the most stylish outfits ever!

Throughout my career, I’ve probably helped thousands of women in the dressing room. And you know what? One thing happened over and over again: they often found too many things they loved 😉 Thankfully, I’m pretty good at narrowing down choices. I know that selecting the best pieces that will create many, many different outfits. This is why I’m revisiting my take on a “capsule wardrobe.”

A while back, I wrote a post called “Are Capsule Wardrobes Even Worth It” where I explore the concept that capsule wardrobes can be a little ‘unexciting’ unless you add in some fun stuff. But, the starting point is actually the most important one: you have to make sure you have the right pieces! Hopefully this post with help you with that 🙂

Today’s post is part I of a very important post (part II coming soon). For now, part I features the modern, Fall capsule wardrobe I’ve created for you. Susie’s Fall Capsule Wardrobe

Trust me, it was really hard to narrow this down (!!). But, the pieces below are ones I carefully selected for this brand new fall capsule wardrobe. You really have to start with the basics in order to create an amazing wardrobe. Without them, it’s really difficult to create good outfits. Then, once you have that part covered, what’s the best way to keep things fresh and updated? Just add new, stylish and maybe even colorful accessories!

All Important Jackets

One of the main items of every great wardrobe

These stylish jackets will get you through most any social situation! For example, a flowy trench looks amazing with denim, but it’s also perfect with most dresses. This new J.Crew cardigan is super versatile, and is available in other colors as well. I love shirt jackets, and both the denim belted one and the houndstooth are so good! The black knit blazer by Rag & Bone is a new purchase and it’s so comfy. It feels more like a sweater! Veronica Beard makes some of my favorite blazers, and the Miller Dickey jacket is a top seller. The cool hidden zipper allows for a dickey option, and there are many good ones right now, including this scarf one. Finally, the Moncler puffer is amazing (though spendy), and layering a hoodie under is the perfect way to give it an update!

Essential Layering pieces

You only need a few to complete your outfits

Sometimes people ask me how many white t-shirts I own 😂 The answer is TWO!! A few good layering pieces will cover you for almost all occasions. For example, I love a black blouse and black jean outfit for a Friday. And, a black blouse can also be super chic with a trouser. Striped tees and a graphic top like this new Paris one are also great layering pieces — and they’re just so cool! A silk cami is a great year-round item that works under denim jackets, cozy cardigans and any blazer. Lastly, a cardigan and a hoodie are solid extra pieces to consider depending on the climate where you live.

Ideally, owning several pairs of jeans will cover you in the wardrobe department. The Vuori jogger is the perfect weekend option, and Frame trouser pants are great basics. By the way, the Norma Kamali dress has been a personal favorite purchase all year — and it looks good on everyone!

Fun, stylish accessories elevate all your outfits. So, I recommend investing in the best bag you can for your fall wardrobe capsule. For example, this Chloe tote has been my favorite purchase of the year, along with this belt that works with everything. And, sunglasses always add a glamorous touch … so having one pair you feel really good in works wonders! Finally, a scarf is this season’s must-have accessory — check out this new animal print one.

Shoes, shoes, shoes

Not much to say except, who doesn’t love shoes?

What is my recommendation for most of your outfits? Neutral shoes! For example, a nude pump just kind of disappears, and it makes your legs go on forever 😉 A great sandal, like this favorite by Schutz, goes with many fall outfits. And, believe it or not, the Schutz sandals are really comfortable 🙂 A while back, I finally decided to take my own advice so I purchased these Gucci loafers. I plan on wearing them all the time — they’re the perfect shoe for transitioning seasons.
