If you can only buy one pair of jeans … make it these!

Denim is a hot topic around here, and since every cute outfit revolves around denim, it’s no wonder we talk about it all the time! Recently, I’ve been writing about “the secret to buying denim” (read here). So, what’s the secret? Buy best sellers! Trust me when I say this works, because I’ve seen it first hand in the dressing room over and over again. I’m not sure I ever had an occasion when a client didn’t find a pair of jeans that fit her really well. And, it’s not like she was trying on dozens of pairs! Sticking to proven styles, or best-sellers, ends up resulting in success for 9 out of 10 women — every single time!

As I started thinking about my own fall outfits, and which jeans I’ll be wearing most often, I realized there’s one jean wash I absolutely can’t live without: black! If you can only buy one pair of jeans, whether they’re a slim, straight leg style that fits just about everyone, a faux leather style like this one, or even a flare like this — make them black. However, having several different washes and fits is a good investment, because you’ll wear them all the time. Today’s post is about the best styles and how to wear them, and of course,  a little street style inspo,. I hope you find a pair (or two) you love!

My favorites: Coated denim

Every year, all my favorite brands introduce coated denim in the fall, and I believe every wardrobe should include a pair (or two). They have a leather-like texture, and look beautiful when paired with cozy cardigans or silky blouses. They can also be worn with a t-shirt and casual jacket. My go-to favorites that I’ll be wearing again this fall include the Frame Le Sylvie, which is a high rise, slim, straight leg. And, it has just been re-stocked! If you like a slight kick flare, then the ones I’m wearing below right are perfect.

Mother best-sellers

Well, I could go on and on about how good Mother denim is! And probably the number one most worn jean in my closet are Mother Dazzlers. They’re the ONE pair that almost everyone I ever helped in the dressing room can wear! They’re a 9 3/4″ rise, stretchy and nice and slim (I’m wearing them below left). The Mother Hustler is another top seller. It has an 11″ rise, and is also stretchy with a wider leg opening. The wash on the Hustlers is a slightly washed black called Encounters At Night, and it has  just been re-stocked. Lastly, the number one wash at Mother Denim is called Not Guilty, and it’s the perfect black color. Look here to see all the amazing styles offered in this best-selling wash!

Under $100 styles

I’ve talked for several years about the Levi’s 724s, and they’re really SO good — as long as you’re under 5’4″ (ish), as they tend to run on the shorter side. They’re the only pair of jeans to date that I haven’t gotten hemmed. I can’t say enough good things about them! I’ve worn mine regularly for several years, all year round. If you’re taller, there’s a longer length here. Another pair is skinnies (!!) by Madewell, in the wash Black Sea. I do still like a skinny, especially when paired with something a little more oversized, like all the cool poplin shirts we’re seeing everywhere.

Flares & wider-leg styles

The updated silhouette to purchase this fall is a long flare leg, and I can’t remember a time where they’re so many styles to choose from! It’s exciting, since they’re slimming, leg lengthening and they feel new. The Mother Weekenders I’m wearing below are favorites, and I just noticed they’re now available in the Not Guilty black wash I mentioned above. Wider-leg styles are also trending, like the Anessa by Paige. Give your wardrobe an update by adding one of these styles!

Frame Mini boot

The Crop Mini-Boot by Frame is a best-seller, and it’s available in many different washes. Saks also has a great selection here. The one I’m wearing below is a wash called Kerry, and it’s a slight black color. It has a 10 1/2″ rise, and it fits almost everyone!
