How to build the best vacation capsule wardrobe ✈️

It feels so good to be traveling again, and it seems like everyone I know is going somewhere. Whether it’s a close-to-home vacation or a trip to Europe, packing can definitely be tricky. I’m no expert (and if anything I tend to overpack), but when it comes to helping friends and clients, I have it down! Sticking to one color palette helps if you’re traveling overseas, and so does bringing items that can be worn at least three different ways. And of course, if you’re going somewhere sunny, dresses and bathing suits are easy choices. Since we all need help in this department, I thought I’d share with you how to build the best vacation capsule wardrobe ever!

Each kind of trip has its own capsule wardrobe, so save this post to use as a reference when you need ideas. This was a fun post to write, because I love to travel and most of us dream experiencing new places. Personally, visiting my family in England this summer is tops on the list — and now I have my own capsule wardrobes, which will make packing super easy 😊 Whether it’s to the beach/sunny locale or to a wedding, or an active break or a sightseeing trip, this post has you covered!

But first … the hero pieces

What are hero pieces of a capsule wardrobe? Well, I’m talking about a great denim jacket, comfy black knit pants, a cashmere wrap and simple white tee. These are the basics that work for every trip, no matter where you’re going! To see more of my favorites, click here.

Going to to Europe? Lucky you!

When I think about visiting my family in England, I remember that the weather usually has highs and lows, like here in Oregon. This makes it easy to put this capsule together: I always bring a denim jacket, Vuori joggers and a scarf. A lightweight trench coat is a great addition, as is a dress that works for both day and evening, like this one.  Also, I love these sandals — the flat Schutz ones keeps selling out, but this low-heeled sandal works with everything. Add a great crossbody bag like this favorite Gucci , and a tote (love the Chloe Woody collection) and you’ll be covered in the handbag department!

Daytime casual outfits

Since it’s spring, a capsule for now should include casual summer dresses, cute summer tops, flowy pants, and lighter colored denim. Make sure you have a go-with-everything slide sandal like this, and cool sneakers like this, or even a more affordable pair like these — these will make all your travel outfits that much better. And a straw or canvas tote doesn’t hurt either. I absolutely love this new Rails dress and this Rails top — so perfect for spring and summer!

Going out to dinner

It’s fun to get a little dressed up for dinner, so  it’s key to have an easy dress or two that’s versatile. Including a low heeled shoe like this or this is also a good idea. So is a jacket of some kind — denim, a blazer or even leather depending on the season. When I travel, I like to add fun jewelry that’s not too expensive in my capsule, like this bracelet or these earrings that are only $40!

B2: L’Agence denim jacket | ATM tee | Sparkly shoes | Flowy pants | Hoop earrings | Balenciaga bag | Perfume

Capsule for going to the beach ☀️

These are my favorite kind of travel outfits to pack! Talk about easy: sunscreen, cute coverups, hats, sunnies and a couple of swimsuits. If you find a coverup dress that does double duty for cocktail hour, even better!

B2: White Swimsuit | Printed Pants | Cult Gaia Tote | Sandals | Sunglasses | Earrings

Active!

Some of us are more active than others, but even I pack an active outfit or two every time I go on a trip 😉 Right now there are many cute pieces available, and I especially like anything tennis-inspired. This Everywhere Belt Bag is the best — I take it on every vacation. So is this cozy cardigan that always comes with me! I noticed recently that J.Crew introduced a new active line, and I tried the skirt and dress and absolutely love them. Of course, the Vuori jogger is a must-have when you travel, and so is a great workout legging like this.

Board 1: Dress | Hoodie | Visor | Tote | Nike sneakers

B2: Cardigan | White tank | Leggings | Hat | Sunglasses | Everywhere Belt Bag | Sneakers

B3: Bra | Matching skirt | Chloe tote | Veja sneakers | Hydroflask |1/2 zip sweaterHat

  1. Hi Susie
Question for you. How do you tuck in the Anine Bing “Paris” tee? I find it really long and difficult to tuck in with so much extra fabric in the length. Thank You!!!!!
