My stylist friends all agree: this one piece makes every outfit!

My stylist friends all agree: this one piece makes every outfit!

Lately my Nordstrom stylist friends and I have been talking about which pieces make great outfits. And while we all have differing ideas, my stylist friends all agree: this one piece makes every outfit! Is it denim? Whereas denim is super important since the right denim is foundational, the item we stylists refer to as the “third piece” is the key to every great outfit. What is this “third piece” you really can’t have too many of? Well, it’s basically a jacket of any kind: leather, denim, blazer, utility, cardigan, trench — you get the idea. Based on my personal experience, you should own several different styles for maximum versatility. Also, jackets tend to stay relevant longer, and they make such an impact on every outfit that I think they’re worth the investment!

Today’s post is about the best jackets out there, everything from this one under $100 to a flowy trench to a non-black leather jacket (black still works too!). All chic and stylish, they are truly the secret to a stylish, put-together, confident look. Keep reading to see my jacket round-up — trust me, you can’t go wrong with any of these!

P.S. Today my Nordstrom6 friends are sharing our love of the all-important “third piece” (check out my Instagram Reels post and stories). And, if you’re new to So Susie and want to stay up to date on all things stylish, subscribe now and never miss a post!

Flowy trench

Including a flowy trench in your wardrobe is a smart way to add a jacket layer for extra warmth, but still have it be a part of your outfit. In other words, not a coat! Think lightweight and flowy — it’s so elegant and sophisticated. Ideally, if you own a black one and an ivory one, and you’ll be covered for any event, from simply running errands to going out. Always looks great, and you’ll have it forever!

I own the silk trench above and I love it. The cream color is versatile and I’ve worn it for several seasons. Just this morning, I spotted this new one at Banana Republic

A black trench is key, and this Theory one is hands down the best!

For an affordable option, I saw this Halogen one the other day — it’s a great one too

Oversized blazer

If you’re only going to add one piece to your wardrobe this spring, make it an oversized blazer! My daughter Em and I popped into Zara today and found that the entire store is packed full of oversized blazers (she picked up this cool brown one). They’re on trend for sure. The store was the most colorful I’ve ever seen it, with green, pink and orange everywhere. What a perfect way way to move into the spring season!

Love this oversized one (runs a touch roomy). Throw it on (like you would any jacket) over a tee and jeans. So chic!

This new one under $100 is perfect with a white tee and denim

The Banana Republic style above also comes in black and white. These are good options!

Love love this pretty shade of blue

For a great basic, check out this J.Crew trench, and this one too

And of course, you can’t ever go wrong with a classic Burberry

Faux leather blazer

Faux leather blazers are my personal favorites. They add a little *cool* to every outfit, they’re a little trendy, and the prices are so reasonable. The one below, available at Anthropologie, runs a touch small. There are many outfit possibilities, but my favorite is a faux leather blazer with faded jeans and heels. See below for ideas!

Love this one above. I’ve worn it over a hoodie, over a silky blouse, and over an all-black combo — so good! Runs a touch small

Found this one at Evereve that runs a little small. The leather quality is really good

Recently spotted this one, fun and slightly oversized!

Non-black leather jacket

Leather jackets have been our go-to’s in recent years, and they’re considered wardrobe staples at this point. But, if you’re ready for something new, try a different color. This white one by LaMarque has been on my radar for months, and this Madewell best-selling one is available in colors like olive green and saddle brown. You’ll be surprised how versatile a non-black leather jacket can be!

This one by Madewell is a good one, size up since it runs a little small. This new oversized one is cool too

AllSaints makes some of my favorites, they also run small

Love the brand LaMarque — see this one that’s currently 20% off

Bomber jacket

Bomber jackets are the newest update, and all the fashion girls have started wearing them. Seen recently on the runways at Prada, this one piece is certain to start popping up everywhere. I just purchased a nylon black one by Avec Les Filles (link is below) and it’s definitely a little more fashion forward than my usual jackets! But, I decided to go for it since it will work for a special outfit I’ll be trying out next week when I visit the Fashion Valley store in San Diego. See below for some other good options.

Free People always has great on-trend styles

This mixed media one at Revolve is fun

Shirt jacket

I’ve been loving the shirt jacket trend, and most recently this Sandro one caught my eye. Shirt jackets are super comfortable, and this one piece is an easy, modern way to add a layer. Wear with joggers, workout leggings and of course, denim.
