The one denim style you need this spring!
When I first started out as a personal stylist, I worked out of the denim department. After severa lyears there, I learned all about denim — inside and out — thanks to the many sales reps who shared valuable information and style tips. And, on a special Nordstrom trip to LA a couple of years ago, I met Paige from Paige Denim who shared her incredible journey — which ironically started at Nordstrom in Alaska! I’m telling you all of this because this is where my love of denim comes from, and to this day, I believe it’s the starting point of every great outfit. I think it’s better to buy fewer jeans, but make sure the ones we purchase are current, well-fitting and versatile. Since we wear them year round, they are worth every penny!
Today’s post is all about denim! What’s trending, which styles work for most of us, and the one denim style you need this spring. Denim is a popular topic here on So Susie, and it is the subject I get asked about most often. Here are some of your questions: what’s the correct length? Should I purchase white, or will ecrú do the trick? Am I too old for distressed denim? Which jeans should I buy to look taller? What styles work for shorter people? You get the idea! So, I’ll answer a few questions at the end, and I really hope you find a new jean or two that you love — you’ll wear them all the time, I promise!
P.S. My Nordstrom 6 friends and I did a denim try-on, and today we’re all sharing our findings on our IG stories (see my Reels video for more ideas). A couple of noteworthy tips: we ALL love the Paige Cindy, Mother Hustler and Fidelity Cher. We struggled to find a pair of Good Americans we all loved (we’re still looking), and the AGOLDE Riley is the only style we found that works for all of us!

Denim Trends 2022

One of my favorite things about writing this blog is researching trends that work for you. In my opinion, it’s the easiest way to feel and look youthful and still be “age appropriate” — whatever that means! 😉 Several denim trends that will be everywhere for Spring 2022 include darker washes, wider leg denim (both cropped and full length), full length denim and flares. The number one denim style that works for everyone
Which denim style goes with every outfit? A slim, straight leg style! It’s the easiest update you can make, and it works for everyone … yes everyone! I’ve always been able to find a pair of jeans for my friends and clients — trust me on this one!

Longer flare jeans are trending …
Talk about leg-lengthening! This is one of the trends I’m really excited about. For months I’ve been trying to find a pair besides the Mother Weekenders (which I still love), but it has been challenging because it reminds me of the early 2000’s if they’re not styled correctly 😂 I landed on this pair by Frame, and the dark wash is so cool. Last year, I ventured out in a pair of white, wide-leg jeans, and I can’t believe how many shout-outs I got! It’s really exciting when a new silhouette comes out. This is another trend I’m loving right now. The Fidelity Malibu, the Rag & Bone Maya and the Paige Leena are styles that I’ve seen on, and I know they’re really good!

Denim jackets, shirts and dresses — so stylish
There are many great selections in this category. I really can’t imagine getting dressed without the option of a denim jacket! I have collected four over the years, and still love and wear them all. A denim jacket is perfect for so many situations, and I’m currently seeing newer, more shaped styles. Although really, anything goes! Below are some favorites.

Should I purchase white or will écru do the trick?
There’s room for both! If you’re like me and wear white all the time, then having another option like écru is a nice addition to your denim collection. There’s something very sophisticated about a natural jean, and I especially love it with black. Two favorites include the Paige Cindy in tonal écru and the Frame Mini Boot in natural.

Like most of you, I have my daily go-to’s, but I love discovering new styles, like the flare I mentioned above and the new AGOLDE I just tried — so good! Below are my personal favorites that I own and highly recommend for everyone.

Am I too old for distressing? NO!! Wear what you want — I mean I might stay away from crazy torn jeans, but that’s personal preference
You’re so petite and I’m tall — there’s no way I can purchase off your blog! Keep in mind, I have everything altered. I’ll make a note when something runs short. But generally speaking, all the denim I talk about works for all shapes and sizes. Be sure and check out my tab Nordstrom friend @dg_Stylist!
Do you hem your denim? If so, what’s the right length? Yes on hemming, and length is a tricky subject. If it’s a cropped style, there should be a little gap between your shoe and the bottom of the jean. I was playing around with 3-3 1/2 ” off the floor, but I haven’t tested it enough to really know
What styles/brands work for tall people? Look for longer inseams like these from Mother, and check out Madewell, Frame and Good American.
Best size inclusive brand? Hands down Good American and Madewell. Paige has recently come out with their Flaunt line, and it looks good
