The secret style tip everyone should know!

The other day, I wore the simple outfit above — and for some reason I felt a little extra … pretty. The pieces weren’t anything fancy: a cashmere sweater I’ve had for a couple years, favorite jeans in a medium wash, and a neutral colored bootie. I know, the cute Chloe tote took it up a few notches, but I did have a lightbulb moment: sometimes the best outfits are made up of the simplest pieces. The result? An easy, elegant outfit that always works! The key to good basics is to make sure the accessories, like a bag or a scarf, are a little extra special. You can find most everything you need at my favorite place — Nordstrom, of course!

Today’s post features 5 basic pieces you can use to create simple but stylish outfits. And what’s the secret style tip everyone should know? Match your shoes to your top, just like I did in the photo above. This little tip is SO EASY — and it always elevates your outfit … always. Try a camel shoe/camel sweater combo, or gray shoe/gray sweater combo — you’ll see what I mean 😉 Keep reading to get a few more ideas, with all items available at Nordstrom!

#1 The best basic sweater you’ll ever own — This cashmere v-neck style by Vince is an all-time favorite, and you can wear it most seasons. I also love this $79 cashmere version. For a couple of other options, look at this one or this one. They’re all so good! See below how to style it.

and the secret style tip: match your shoes to your top!

Left: Camel coat | Burberry scarf | Vince sweater | BB hat | Paige Cindy | YSL bag | Veja sneakers | Right: Allsaints leather jacket | Vince sweater | Paige Cindy | Scarf | David Yurman ring | Bottega handbag | Balmain tee | Stuart Weitzman boot

#2 Coordinate your shoes with your sweater — This Rag & Bone boots are hands down favorites, and so is this black pair by Aquatalia. Below are loafer and boot options – you can’t go wrong with any of these. Here’s where the style tip comes into play: your boots and sweater should be the same color. Instant style!

#3 Update your denim — This goes without saying — having cool, updated denim is the key to every great outfit! Right now, I’m loving the Frame mini-boot, Mother denim and the Paige Cindy. All of these styles are best-sellers and they fit most everyone.

#4 Coordinating accessories are the key to every great outfit — I believe in having several bags that are versatile enough to work with many different outfits. Add a cool and sophisticated scarf like this print one, or a solid basic black like this favorite. Trust me, the accessories always take your outfits up a notch!

Style tip: Camel shoe combo

#5 Add a stylish jacket — It’s what almost everyone sees, so it should be versatile and well-fitting. I really like faux leather blazers like this, or a great trench, like this Burberry or this affordable option. This is a key piece, so make sure you love it!

  1. Hi Susie,

I’m curious….if you want to wear a rich color such as a fuchsia sweater and blue denim, would you pair it with a neutral shoe? Or would you wear it with black denim, and then black booties or shoes?
    As always….THANKS!! XO

  2. Hi Susie,

I love your style and Ii rely on your style boards for inspiration. My question is when I wear the graphic tees with jeans, do I need a belt? I noticed in your pictures that you don’t seem to be wearing one. Thanks! Laura
