“I’m a Former Nordstrom Buyer – My Closet Wouldn’t be the Same Without These Basics”

Who What Wear — recent article, here

When Bobby Schuessler, Senior Market Editor at Who What Wear, sends me an email, it really makes my day 🙂 For this current WWW article, he asked me which fresh and fashion-forward basics my closet cannot be without. As I came up with a list, I thought about what best describes “elevated basics.” Well, they are versatile, so they can be worn a variety of different ways, and you can use them longer than very trendy pieces. Also, they can be worn most seasons, so they’re worth what you spend to buy them. And, they might have an edge, something that makes them on-trend and relevant.

Elevated basics should fit seamlessly into your wardrobe and be a go-to when putting together your outfits. I try to be thoughtful about what I select, and these classic but stylish basics are the ones I came up with this month! FYI, I actually pick the items featured in the WWW articles, but they add options for purchase. Of course, here on the blog, I select everything that goes into the post. Read on to see the 7 basics — I hope you like them! You can read the WWW article here.

The Relaxed Trench

J.Crew trench | Agolde denim | Gucci sandals | Dior bag | ATM tee | Gucci sunglasses

A good trench says ‘fall,’ and wearing it with distressed denim gives it a more relaxed vibe. Try an oversized style with a hoodie, sweatpants, and cool sneakers.

The trench I’m wearing above is a good classic style, and it’s available in extended sizes and petites. This year, I’m looking for a bit more of a relaxed vibe — like this — to update my coats. Also, I’ve been getting lots of questions on these Gucci rubber sandals! They’re a great buy, and YES, they’re really comfortable 🙂

Modern jeans

“I’m pretty much only wearing two styles—either flares or slimmer straight-leg jeans. A lighter wash always looks great, but maybe try a dark, rigid style or coated denim. It’s the wash to add for fall.”

Jeans are always a hot topic, and every day I’m asked which ones are my favorites. So, here’s the current list! Paige Cindy: a great straight leg jean that fits everyone. Frame Mini Boot or Le High Straight or Le Sylvie Slender: all SO good! Let’s not forget Mother denim: Hustler, Dazzler and Insider are favorites.

Stylish Moto jackets

“Pretty much everyone needs a great moto jacket. Black is the obvious choice, but adding a color gives you more outfit options, too. I especially love them over dresses—so chic and works any time of year.”

AllSaints is a favorite brand for motos, and I just spotted this new color — so gorgeous, and I think worth the splurge. I also LOVE this Madewell style. It’s a little more relaxed, and this year I spotted it in this cool green color!

Cool Leather Separates

“I’m serious. If it’s faux leather—pants, blazers, dresses—I’m obsessed! From Zara to Nanushka, there are options for everyone.”

I love faux or vegan leather anything … sooo much! It’s soft and drapey depending on the piece you select, and there are many options. Sometimes, you’d never guess how much some of these pieces really cost — they can be quite affordable. Find one or two you love — I’m certain you’ll get compliments!

Comfy Sneakers

Blank NYC blazer | Mother denim | Golden Goose sneakers | Grey hoodie, similar

“I have my eye on the New Balance 327 trainers, but any retro style will work. Classic sneakers are making a comeback for sure! Stylish but practical, they can even replace your boots right now.”

Right now I’m loving the classic, retro styles. I just picked up this new Rag & Bone style — which is a LOVE! Veja makes a cool sneaker, and so does Adidas and love this color from Loewe. Make sure the ones you own are cleaned up and look mostly white 🙂

Black blazers

Veronica Beard blazer | Frame cami | Prada pumps | Givenchy bag | Mother denim

“You should never be without a black blazer, and a slightly oversize style is everywhere. Wear it to a meeting, over a dress, or with denim and sneakers on the weekend, and you’ll always feel put-together.”

I’ve gone on and on about black blazers (!!) but really, they’re a key piece! Look for oversized styles like this, or updated classics like the Scuba jacket and Miller jacket, both from Veronica Beard.

Printed tops

Reformation blouse | Paige Cindy jeans | Sandals | Denim jacket | Pendant longer necklace | Gucci bag

“A printed top is a fashion-girl favorite right now, and it’s an elevated piece you’ll wear from coffee to cocktails to everything in between!”

Having a few printed blouses in your collection allow for an easy outfit, all the time! This Reformation style is a favorite, and it comes in several patterns (see below). This blouse always sells out, so don’t wait! Super versatile and adds a pop — who doesn’t love that?
