The style trick that works every time!
I know it sounds a little silly, but taking mirror selfies really does work! There’s something about looking at yourself in a mirror vs looking at a photo that helps you see more clearly whether your outfit makes sense. If you have an important event, or are just packing for a trip, mirror selfies always help when it’s time to make final outfit decisions. And I must admit, until I started this little Instagram and blog journey, I NEVER dreamed I would be taking photos of myself ALL THE TIME 😂
These photos are not perfectly edited, and not perfectly posed or put together, but they’re definitely real life. A little messy, a little imperfect … which is sometimes how we feel in the morning! My favorite spot for taking selfies at home is in my bedroom because the lighting is always good. I try and take the photos when I’m showered and have makeup on because I feel better that way, and that helps the clothes look better too. After a selfie, I realize there are some combinations that don’t go well together, and a few things may even get returned after reviewing the photos. Try it – don’t worry, no one will see you 😉 Let me know what you think of this little style trick!

Veronica Beard blazer

Left: Veronica Beard blazer | Frame coated denim | Schutz sandals | Gucci bag | Lace cami | Right: Veronica Beard blazer | Anine Bing tee | Mother denim | Prada pump | Mansur Gavriel clutch
I can’t say enough about this Veronica Beard blazer, I’ve probably worn it a hundred times already! It’s reminiscent of a Balmain style, and it’s nicely shaped, plus the hidden zipper allows for all the cool dickeys to be added! (For reference, I’m wearing a size 2 but usually I’m a size 4.) Anine Bing tees are so cool, and they go with everything from joggers to denim to blazers. This style of Mother denim is called the Hustler, which is a favorite fit! Lastly, this clutch is such an easy way to add a little color, and here are new colors I spotted recently.
J.Crew sweater + Coated denim + Pointy toe boot
J.Crew cardigan | Schutz boot | Givenchy bag | Lace cami | Frame denim
These J.crew cardigans are the best: well priced, comfy and versatile. They run a little roomy — I’m wearing an XS, which is ok since I like them slightly oversized. The Schutz boots are easy to wear with dresses and denim, and they run a touch small. Lastly, the Frame coated denim is a slim straight leg and runs pretty true to size (maybe even a tiny bit small). You’ll love the subtle shine, it adds interests and a little bit of cool 🙂
Bright sweaters

Left: Cashmere sweater | Schutz boot | Givenchy bag | Mother denim | Right: Alice & Olivia sweater | Frame denim
Last year I purchased this polo-style sweater and it immediately sold out, so my recommendation this year is don’t wait. It comes in the prettiest colors, including this pink — check it out here! The medium wash Frame denim is SO soft and stretchy; it has a frayed hem, which is a nice detail, and light distressing.
Moncler jacket + Vuori joggers
Moncler jacket | Vuori joggers | Rag & Bone sneakers | Hoodie, similar | Balenciaga tote
This lightweight Moncler jacket is cozy and I plan on wearing it ALL THE TIME! It’s even part of my airplane outfit for today’s trip (stay tuned to see where) … I’m wearing the size small because I wanted to layer a hoodie or a sweater underneath. Of course the Vuori joggers are amazing, and I’ve written about them over and over again. Check this post out to see more!
Sweaters + Mother denim

Left: Vince 1/2 zip sweater | Dior bag | Mother denim | Schutz boot | Right: Frame sweater | Gold pendant
I love simple sweaters and these are good ones. The Vince 1/2 zip is new, and I’ve had many questions about sizing on this one. I’m wearing the XS, and it’s stretchy and somewhat forgiving but nicely shaped. The Frame sweater is cropped, so if you’re tall, it might not work.
AllSaints leather jacket + Vince slipddress
AllSaints leather jacket | Vince dress | Prada pump | Marc Fisher sandal (I couldn’t decide!)
AllSaints leather jackets run small, so I went up to a size 6 and it fits nicely. They make the softest leather jackets, and I love this style too. Also, the Vince slipdress is another piece I’ve gone on and on about! It’s THE BEST!
Anine Bing tee + Vuori Jogger
These two items are ideal pieces for travelling!
Silk sweater + Mother denim
Sweater | Frame coated denim | Schutz sandal
This sweater is so elegant, and you asked many questions about the sleeve length (which was way too long for me). The tailor did a wonderful job of shortening the sleeves from the shoulder! And, you’ll wear it through fall and into the holidays — it’s that good!
Thank you for reading! xx
Such a beneficial tool! I do that too! Taking pics of myself in the mirror wearing my outfit of the day can be so inspiring yet so educational. It helps me so much with styling and selecting colors and fit.
Susie, You have helped me so much. Thank you! And you are so right about taking the selfies. I purchased new denim, sweater, pumps, boots and camis, and took pictures of the pieces with my tried and trues and scrutinized each shot to make sure everything balanced out. And yes, some of the pics had me in two different shoes! Taking the time to get eight (so far) outfit combos just right will serve me well when there’s a time crunch. It also helped me see what not-so-new items should be purged. Can’t wait for the weather to cool down to show off my new looks!
Hi Katherine! First, thank you so much for writing me to tell me the selfies helped! I’m glad it is a useful trick for you, and I do agree it will help you when you’re in a hurry. Hopefully, it was also kind of fun 🙂 Second, comments like yours are why I do what I do, so I really appreciate you reaching out. You made my day!
Take care,
Susie xx
