Is it time to toss your skinnies? You decide!

Is it time to toss your skinnies? You decide!

This is a touchy subject for sure, believe it or not — it has been going on for years! And while I’m not going to say with certainty that it’s time to toss them, I can tell you I’ve folded mine up and put them in the closet. In other words, they’re not on current rotation. This recent article in the WSJ, “Skinny Jeans Make You Look Old? These Women Don’t Care,” caught my eye and is a good read. I mean, for most of us, that’s the last thing we want 😉

So … is it time to toss your skinnies? You decide! My goal with this post is to give you enough information to figure out whether skinnies still belong in your denim collection. Read on to see how to nail a stylish, off-duty look all summer long! Also, my Nordstrom6 friends and I are sharing our favorite casual looks today on Insta (in case you’re wondering who the Nordstrom6 are, you can find out more here and here). We all agree that denim is the starting piece of every cool, casual outfit, whether it’s jeans, shorts, or denim jackets. These are key pieces, and it’s SO IMPORTANT to make sure they’re stylish and updated!

Keep reading for the 10 summer staples that are my go-to’s for off-duty, casual style!

#1 Denim

Left: Paige store, LA | Right: Flowy trench | Anine Bing tee | Sam Edelman sandals | Sunglasses  | Balenciaga bag

As I mentioned above, I haven’t been wearing my skinny jeans much lately, and instead have been reaching for slim straight leg styles. This is THE jean that looks good on everyone, and it’s both stylish and current. Below are the all-time favorite styles I recommend:

Paige Cindy

Mother Dazzler, Tomcat or Rascal (here and here)

Frame Le High straight

#2 White shirts

I’ll live in this white Frank & Eileen shirt all summer long. It’s not inexpensive, but it’s a comfy, oversized style you’ll wear all the time. I find the fabric to be cooling for some reason … you’ll love it! For a lower priced option, check out this one by Madewell.

#3 Joggers

Levi’s denim jacket | Michael Stars tank | Vuori joggers | Givenchy bag | Valentino flip flops

This is basically the only jogger I recommend. These by Vuori are so good, and if you don’t have them yet, now is the time! (I’m wearing a size small for reference.) For a long time, Nordstrom could barely keep these in stock, but lately all sizes have been available. I’ve been joking for the last two years that Vuori owes me a lifetime supply because they are one of the top selling items on this blog. Well, they finally paid attention, and I’m thrilled to be sponsoring a post next month!! Stay tuned 🙂

#4 ATM tees

There’s a lot of t-shirts out there, but this one is my personal go-to. Yes, ATM tees are a little spendier than most, but they really are amazing: shaped yet forgiving, arm-flattering, and the fabric has a super nice texture. I can’t think of another tee that works as well, whether you’re layering it under a nice blazer or wearing it casually on a Sunday with your favorite denim shorts. SO SO GOOD! I wear the XS, however, I’ve also worn the small and both work — it just depends whether I’m plus 10 or not 😉 I recently branched out and purchased this muscle tee and I’ve been wearing on repeat as well!

#5 Casual summer dresses

Paige dress, also here and here | Dior slides | YSL tote

These lightweight, cute dresses are basically all I wear on warm summer days. Current favorites include this flowy gauze one by Velvet (see more here), this tiered style by J.Crew, and t-shirt dresses like this one above and this Zella one. All super comfy and perfect for running around town!

#6 Denim jackets

I can’t imagine life without a denim jacket! My current go-to’s are any by Levi’s, Fidelity in denim and white, and this best-selling Madewell one (it runs small so size up). I keep dreaming about these by L’Agence – everyone who tries them on LOVES them!

#7 Hats

J.Crew packable hat

Hats are the ultimate summer accessory! Whether it’s a baseball style, a straw one or a bucket hat (I just bought this one) they cover up bad hair days, protect your head and happen to be really stylish 🙂 Here are my personal favorites:

#8 Summer slides

On any given day running around Portland, you’ll find me wearing these Dior slides (a splurge, but I’ve worn them SO much), these Hermés inspired Sam Edelmans, or these Valentino flip flops. Between these three, all my outfits are covered!

#9 Crossbody bag

Anthropologie dress | Gucci bag

I tend towards smaller crossbody bags for the ease of having a hands free option while grocery shopping or  running errands. Plus, they’re stylish! I love this Gucci one above, and it works with everything you’ll wear. This YSL camera bag or Mini-Lou is also really good. You’d be surprised how much fits in these little bags!

#10 Golden Goose sneakers

Pretty much my go-to sneaker of choice! I do have others, but if I’m being completely honest, these are the ones I tend to wear most days. I know they’re expensive, but if you have one pair and wear them all the time for several years, they’re worth it 🙂

Thank you for reading! xx
