The “third piece” you really can’t have too many! 😊

Since we’re all starting to head out … to dinner, on vacation or just “out” … it’s time to start upping our outfit game! And one super important item is what we call the “third piece.” What is the third piece you really can’t have too many of? Well, it’s basically a jacket of any kind: denim, blazer, utility, leather, cardigan, trench — you get the idea. Based on my personal experience, you should own several — and I know this is opposite of what I usually say, but it’s true! Jackets tend to stay relevant longer, and they make such an impact on every outfit that I think they’re worth the investment.

Lately I’ve found some under $100 that I absolutely love, like this $54 utility style, and now this pretty green one. Keep reading to see my jacket round-up — trust me, you can’t go wrong with any of these. Side note: make sure the ones you do own fit properly and are worth their space in your closet. More on that later this week 🙂

Under $100 jackets

Cool jackets don’t need to be expensive! Recently I spotted (and bought) bought two — this one and this one — and you would never know they’re priced under $100. Here are a couple of others that are worth sharing.

Denim jackets

I really can’t imagine life without a denim jacket. Everyone needs at least one — and if you happen to spot another one you want, that’s ok too! I love the faded and slightly oversized Levi’s, and this Madewell style, which is a little darker, is also on constant rotation. They work with everything from (Vuori) joggers to springy dresses to white jeans.

Blazers

This year, blazers kind of took a back seat — except this faux leather one I wore all the time. But now since we’re heading out again, it’s time to reconsider. A blazer adds the perfect cool-girl polished kind of look, and brings your outfits up several notches.

Flowy trench

This soft flowy trench is not a coat, it’s actually part of the outfit! I love this one by Theory — it’s a splurge, but the fabric is so beautiful you’ll have it for a long time. The Halogen one I’m wearing above is a crazy good price, and I know first hand how amazing it is. Works perfectly with denim, and even dresses — it’s a favorite piece in my own closet!

A utility jacket is so important, I would include it in a capsule wardrobe. It works most seasons, and the color pairs beautifully with white, denim and black. This one for only $54 is a deal! I’m positive it won’t last, so don’t wait to order one. I also like this one by Anne Bing and this one by DL 1961. Find one you love and wear it all the time!

Cardigan jackets

Cardigans of any kind work as a ”third piece.” Favorites include this $69 find I wrote about here. The J.Crew ones are really good, and between the longer Juliette, the shorter Sophie and the newest Camille blazer, you can’t go wrong. I own all three and wear them all the time 🙂

 

Leather jackets

This is another item that took a back seat in my own wardrobe this year! But, it might just be a great time to bring them back out. A cool leather jacket is a great option to wear over a dress, or out on a Friday night. I love AllSaints — super soft and the perfect shape — and this relaxed style by Madewell is a best seller!

Trench coats that are coats!

A trench coat is THE stylish staple to own for 2021! Seen everywhere on the style set, a trench coat is versatile and cool. Wear it dressed up with denim, or dressed down with sneakers. I love this one from J.Crew, but there’s also this plaid one from Club Monaco and this one from Mango that everyone seems to have!
