How to master the art of high/low dressing

Ok, here’s the deal: you can wear a simple outfit like a white tee, jeans and a jacket. But, if you add just one designer piece, like a great handbag or a glamorous pair of sunglasses, you instantly bring that look up a notch. Next thing you know, your outfit is more stylish and polished — it’s elevated. This is the art of high/low dressing, and chances are many of the fashion girls who catch your eye on Instagram or Pinterest have this mastered!

Today’s post is all about beautiful designer pieces AND their affordable counterparts. I’ll tell you how to master the art of high/low dressing, and help you build a stylish, versatile wardrobe. Keep reading for 5 key spring trends, both splurge and affordable, and check out the style boards for each. I’m talking flowy trench coats, square-toed sandals that are both practical and cool, and shades of blue that are super easy to wear!

Nordstrom.com has a great selection of designer clothing and has all these trends covered, including many options at reasonable prices. I believe investing in a designer piece here and there really elevates your entire fashion game! Thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post.

This wearable striped shirtdress is really versatile, and you’ll have it for years to come!

Loving this swimsuit and this one too — so cute!

Consider adding anything denim, like this slide and this Burberry tote

#1 The stylish trench coats to own

Trench coats are having a moment right now, and talk about a versatile piece you’ll have for a very long time! A classic trench like this one is always in style, but I’m especially loving the flowy ones — they’re flattering and feminine. Check out this plaid and this neutral style by Club Monaco. Both so good, you can’t go wrong!

#2 Shades of blue

Who doesn’t love shades of blue? This season, blue is everywhere, from denim inspired bags or shoes (like this, this or this) to dresses, and from stripes to florals. And don’t forget jackets, everything from our favorite denim styles to stylish blazers. I recently read about the “it” show Bridgerton, and the effect it’s having on the fashion world … like dresses in Bridgerton Blue!

#3 Square-toed sandals

Talk about an update for all our shoes! Bottega Veneta led the way, and sandals like these are being seen everywhere on fashion girls lately. While many of us aren’t up for the splurge, thankfully there are affordable options from brands like Schutz and Marc Fisher — two of my favorites!

#4 Straight leg denim

I talk a lot about denim on this blog, because we all wear it all the time. If you want a spring update, skip the skinnies and go for a straight leg style. I prefer a slimmer straight leg, because as I’ve seen first hand in the dressing room, this is the style that works for most of us. Check out Paige Cindy, Frame Le High Straight, Mother Dazzler and Tomcat.

#5 Florals

Since many of us will be finally getting together with friends soon, adding a pretty, casual dress to your wardrobe is a good idea. You can dress it down by throwing a denim jacket over it, or even a white sweater over your shoulders. You might be surprised how often you turn to it for warm summer evenings!

#6 Finishing touches

It’s always, always the details that make all the difference in any outfit! This is one area where it’s ok to splurge, since you’ll wear these pieces all the time.

Loving all Anine Bing graphic tees!

One-piece swimsuits like this and this are so stylish these days, especially when paired with a great coverup!

This pink utility jacket caught my eye, and the price is so reasonable!
