Are skinny jeans out? The denim to wear in 2021!

This is something I’ve been thinking about ever since I wrote about it in 2019! I was recently at Nordstrom discussing skinny jeans with several 20-somethings, and their conclusion is yes, they’re out. They told me about some funny TikTok videos going viral (which I just watched). In one video, a Gen Z fashionista suggested we throw them out or cut them up, and in another video, skinnies were relegated to “mom jeans” status. Too funny!

Here’s my take: I do think skinnies are classic jeans that still have a place in our wardrobes. For example, they look great with oversized coats and blazers, combat boots and sneakers like I’m wearing above. However, I think there are stylish ways to wear them which will keep us looking updated, and I think our purchases should be newer styles going forward! Keep reading for the best denim to wear in 2021, and the newest styles to add to your denim collections now!

P.S. I’ve been working really hard on updating my Pinterest boards, and I’d love to know what you think. Straight leg denim

Slimmer, higher rise straight leg denim is the easiest and most updated jean to buy. I prefer this style because it’s more slimming (imo) and I find them easy to wear. They’ll look great with your favorite booties, sneakers, and soon, sandals.

Favorite fits – I’ve tried them all!

Levi’s – 724 and this one, Icon Wedgie

Mother – Dazzler, Rascal, Tomcat

Madewell – The Perfect Vintage Jean

Paige – Cindy

Frame – Le Sylvie

Skinnies

As I mentioned above, skinnies still have a place as long as we’re wearing them with newer, more current pieces. What I love in the Pinterest inspo above is the oversized coats! As the weather gets warmer, try oversized cotton shirts, like this, or an oversized blazer like this one. Any shoe works, but try and make sure it’s one that’s up to date! 🙂

My favorite skinnies are the Mother Looker, Frame Le High Skinny, Fidelity Gwen and the 9″ skinny by Madewell in the color Black Sea (above opening photo).

I find this style to be very flattering on most everyone. Wearing it with a bootie can be a little tricky, but Anine seems to be dialed in 🙂 A sandal (or even this favorite cork sandal) is a good option too. Some brand favorites include Veronica Beard and Frame, who makes some of the best jeans around.

This style is a little trickier to pull off — I tried last year, but they weren’t very flattering, so I gave them away.  This year I’m going to try again! I love this style of jean with a simple heel like the inspo photo above. Cool brands include Totême and Khaite.

Colored denim

Probably the coolest section in this denim post! The color is different and definitely worth trying. Of course, off-white denim is a key style to own, but so is a natural denim color!

  1. Love reading your posts. You’ve got me revising and updating my closet. I’m thinking of splurging on the Veronica Beard Yareli plaid jacket, but I’ve never worn the brand before and would love some info/advice on the fit. Thanks!!
