Which shoes to wear with your favorite denim!

One thing is for certain … many of us are in search of the right denim right now!  When writing this recent post, I had no idea so many of you would message me. You’ve also been sending me DMs and texts asking my advice on which shoes to buy to go with your favorite denim. So, today I’m sharing another technique that has worked over and over in the dressing room — and I’m happy to pass it on to all of you!

First, the dressing room experience. My friends and clients who I saw regularly by appointment would walk into a dressing room full of carefully arranged outfits, including shoes, handbags and accessories. It was so much fun, and I would have loved to wear many of those outfits myself! We didn’t just randomly try everything on — instead, I had a little system 🙂 It always started with a bottom, usually a jean, then a simple go-with-everything shoe, and then we moved on to the fun stuff! From there, every jacket, blouse, sweater and t-shirt worked with the jean/shoe combo! Once the selections were made, we would explore other jean/shoe options, but you get the idea. The foundations were set.

Today’s post is about shoes you’ll wear ALL THE TIME! It’s important to get the basics all lined up so all your outfits come together perfectly. If you’re enjoying these posts, follow me on Instagram, and subscribe to the blog!

The only shoe that works with every outfit

Every single outfit you can think of works when it’s paired with a nude or skin colored shoe. This is why owning several pairs in different styles will make all your outfits come together! The trick is to try them on your feet and make sure the color goes with your skin tone. While recently evaluating my own shoe situation, I discovered I had 8 pairs of nude shoes! I know that sounds a little over the top, but in my defense I’ve acquired them over the past several years. Here’s the thing though: I actually wear them all! And that really says something, because there are many shoes (and clothing) items that don’t get nearly that kind of love.

The Prada heel I wear all the time is surprisingly comfy and is the perfect classic pump, plus it works with every denim outfit. This Vince Camuto arrived on my doorstep today, this Valentino is another favorite (here’s a great copy), and the cork sandal by Schutz is super versatile and still in stock. For a bootie, this Rag & Bone is so good, and the heel is reasonable. See below for more faves!

Boots

Since we’re in the middle of boot season (in most locations), having versatile boots is key for all our denim outfits. This Jimmy Choo splurge has been my go-t0 in recent months. My Nordstrom friend Sandy purchased all 3 colors in this Rag & Bone boot! Marc Fisher is an instagram favorite, and this style and this style are easy basics. Combat boots and styles with chunkier soles are def the boot to buy this year. This Sam Edelman one is designer-inspired, and this one is good too!

Mules & Loafers

I consider mules and loafers to be the equivalent of summer slides. They’re super easy, go-with-everything shoes, and are perfect for the transition between seasons. I love a leopard mule like this one; or try a Gucci mule, which is very stylish and elevates every outfit. This white croc style is really versatile too. For a more affordable option, this Sam Edelman version here and here is pretty close to the Gucci one … kind of!

Sneakers

Thank goodness for sneakers, because they’re stylish and comfy, perfect for our current lifestyle. They work nicely with both skinny jeans and straight leg jeans. I love Golden Goose, and a couple of months ago, I splurged on a pair and have found them to be the perfect sneaker. It took me awhile, but I’m so glad I did because they make everything look cool! There’s also the French brand Veja and Em just picked up these new ones by Adidas. She also has a little obsession with Nike Air Force 1.

Animal Print

I love a good animal print shoe because it’s the perfect way to add a subtle pattern in an elegant and sophisticated way. Recently I’m noticing snake print a little more than leopard, but both are classic and super stylish. Find a boot, or any shoe where the colors work with your outfits, and I’m certain you’ll be pleased with your purchase!

Slides

I consider a heeled slide to be the most versatile shoe to own. First, it works with denim, nicer pants like this Vince style, and of course dresses. Thanks to Bottega Veneta, this style above now has many affordable options.
