The mistake you could be making with your closet!

Do you own the correct essentials?

ESSENTIALS:  The key pieces everyone needs to have in their closet in order to put together solid, event-appropriate, feel-good outfits … every day.

The start of the new year is the perfect time to review your wardrobe essentials and get your closet organized. Having a solid wardrobe foundation not only makes getting dressed easy and effortless, but also helps you prepare for any occasion. I know, I know, these lists are everywhere, talking about the perfect white tee and the best skinny jean to own. But, stay with me because I’m going to share why having your own set of essentials is the absolute key to a carefully thought-out, useful wardrobe. AND — they don’t need to be boring! They can be stylish and affordable and actually fun to put together every day.

After 25 years of helping women in the dressing room, here’s what I’ve observed over and over again:

Everyone’s essentials are different, but as a stylist, I know which ones to recommend.

Trust me. I am very confident when making recommendations about what you should buy and how to wear it. For example, right now, you need to have these go-to items as the foundation of your wardrobe: a great jacket/coat/blazer, a black scarf, a current jean, a stylish shoe, and a nice handbag. Basic. Everyone needs these. And, you can buy them right here!

When a key piece or two is missing, outfits don’t come together.

A client recently told me for the hundredth time “I have nothing to wear!” But as her friend (and stylist), I thought to myself: how can that be?? I had just helped her purchase a few pieces that all worked together beautifully! Well, unbeknownst to me, she had made a couple of returns: a jacket that was the pull-it-all-together essential for most of the outfits, and a black scarf that was the accessory to wear with absolutely everything. We stylists carefully put together outfits that revolve around certain items, so, if you return a key piece, you need to replace it with another one!

My guiding principle as a stylist: what you purchase must be able to be worn at least three different ways (if not more).

I’ll help you find the pieces that will earn you street cred for always looking put together: clothing that will give you miles and miles of wear, season after season. These include your favorite denim to your wear-everywhere blazer to your best shoes.

Here are the essentials that today’s well-dressed, confident woman needs in her wardrobe:

  1. I love this post Susie and I couldn’t agree more! I always try to think of 3 ways to wear an item before I purchase it. The only thing I’m missing right now is that great blazer! I love Veronica Beard and have been eyeing one of hers for a while now! 😉

    1. Oh yes… you should have a good blazer. I love love Veronica beard…and the Dickey options are amazing. There’s a good selection on the vb website. I love the light weight cashmere ones 🙂
If you find a blazer keep me posted. You have the best taste!

  2. Hi Susie,
I love your Blog and reading all your posts. I have a question on the basics that you mentioned. I don’t really look good in black, white and grey so are there basics that you can recommend for people that need to work with other colors?.

    Thank you!

  3. Love this post! I’m like your client who feels like I never have anything to wear, though have a closet filled with clothes! Most of them are basics and high quality, but somehow I struggle to put things together. Because I wait til the last second to get dressed, I end up wearing the same outfits over and over again. Do you ever do in home consultations? In the meantime, I love following your posts and have been placing a lot of orders per your recommendations! Thank you!
