Here’s what to buy yourself for Mother’s Day!

It’s really hard to believe it’s May already — the days just seem to be blending together and flying by! With Mother’s Day coming up this weekend, I thought I’d share a few ideas on what you could buy yourself (or another special mom) as a little treat to celebrate motherhood. It’s wonderful when we get thoughtful gifts from our families, and it’s usually the simple things that bring the most joy, like hand-picked flowers or a really sweet note. So here are some suggestions for store-bought-but-still-nice gifts for yourself (or someone else). I hope you like them!

Before we get started … a personal note to all of you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for following along, especially during this challenging time. My goal is to find new, exciting things you’ll fall in love with, and to help you navigate your online shopping journey for Mother’s Day. You’re always welcome to message me with any questions, feedback, ideas for future posts … anything! I’m at susie@sosusie.com and if you’d like to subscribe, just click here!

#1 Raised garden planters

If I knew how easy it would be to quickly create a vegetable garden, I would have done it long ago! For the last 20 years (I’m not kidding), I’ve torn pages out of magazines (remember when we used to do that?), saved photos on my Pinterest boards, and dreamt about a French-style Potager vegetable garden. So, you can imagine the joy I felt when my college boy said “Mom, lets plant a garden.” I knew I had to jump right on it, so that day we went to Home Depot to investigate our options. Just as we were about to leave, I spotted a kit (below), and knew it was meant to be!  We purchased two, and stacked them; they are 4′ x 4′ x 14″ – perfect for a starter garden. And, you will never believe how long it took to set it up: 30 minutes. We added 8 large bags of dirt — and now it’s ready to plant. SO exciting! I’ve added a few other goodies that will be super useful to you as well. Happy gardening!

#2 Books, Books and more Books

One can never have too many books! I’ve been collecting pretty coffee table books my entire adult life. This began when my dear friend gifted me a couple every Christmas …. for years!! She introduced me to the very first Ina Garten cookbook, and now I own every single one and am counting down until the next one is published. Some other noteworthy favorites include the John Derian book (I wrote all about it here), perfect for tearing out the pages for framing, and anything by Grey Malin — you’ll feel like you’ve been on a sunny vacation! And of course, those by one of my all time favorite interior designers, Mark D. Sikes; they’re full of beautiful photography and inspiring design ideas. Check them out, and a few others, below!

#3 Perfume

There’s nothing quite like opening a brand new bottle of perfume especially on Mother’s Day – it’s truly one of those special little pleasures in life! Recently, I tried hair perfume by Byredo, which is perfect for a day when I want a light scent. Then there’s my all-time favorite (and everyone else’s!), Le Labo, Santal 33 (I wrote about it here). Some others I’m currently wearing include Jo Malone Peony and Blush Suede, and Tom Ford Soleil Blanc (known for its “summer sexy” scent) – I think you’ll love these two! Another way to test a fragrance is to start with a body lotion — it’s an inexpensive way to give a new scent a try. Splurge, you’ll be happy you did!

#4 Jewelry

Lately, I’ve found that adding a pretty new earring or necklace is a nice touch while WFH. These pieces don’t need to be expensive, and should be easy to layer in with your own collections. This past Saturday, my Stylist friends and I got together (virtually) to share our favorite pieces of jewelry on Instagram. You all sent me many questions, and it made me realize we all want/need a little something to look forward to! I linked most of the pieces I talked about here, (click on the top photo/denim jacket) Read on to see the three categories I discussed.

#5 Hair and Face masks

We don’t often take the time to do this, but it’s such a treat to light a nice candle in the bathroom (try this one or this one) and soak in a hot bath for awhile. Even better, apply a hair and/or a face mask before you get in! I recommend the Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3 in-home treatment (your hair will look AMAZING) and Tata Harper’s Resurfacing Mask (leaves skin super glowy and smooth). They’re both a bit of a splurge, but hey — it’s Mother’s Day! Treat yourselves, you deserve it 🙂

Thank you for reading! xo
