8 makeup drawer discoveries

Alex Mill blouse and skirt, older

I cleaned out my makeup drawer and discovered this!

I hope you’re all staying safe and healthy as we navigate “the new normal.” The coronavirus has had a profound effect on our day to day lives, and it’s my hope that these posts might serve as a brief distraction. I’ve heard from many of you that you still want the same content you’ve come to expect from me, so I’m happy to continue providing that for you.

Despite all the bad news, there are heartwarming stories everywhere of people helping out in many ways. A dear friend is delivering food to seniors in my home town of McMinnville; two of the seniors happen to be my parents. I’m so grateful for this act of kindness; thank you sweet Marilyn, who I met last year in “Room 3.” We’re all in this together!

I made a list of things to do here at home that would help me feel accomplished, and maybe this could also help you! Today I went through my makeup drawer, and thought I’d share a few of my discoveries. After all, this is a great time to get some things done that often take a back seat to our busy lives. So, keep reading for a few ideas!

#1. A little organization goes a long way

Now is the perfect time for a clean-up, which includes tossing old brushes and makeup and re-organizing everything into one of these containers. Each comes highly recommended; consider this one for brushes, or this smaller one for the counter. Another idea is to re-purpose glass jars from your favorite candles.

#2. Take extra time for your skin

I’ve recently re-discovered my Clarisonic  (it meant stealing it back from the kids and purchasing new brush heads). Did you know you can remove a face mask with it! I’m also trying this popular Ice Roller this week, and I was gifted this 10-minute exfoliating facial by The Ordinary … thank you Ulta!

#3. Hair care ideas

The other day I CUT MY BANGS MYSELF. What?! No joke, I got a little carried away and even did the sides too! Thankfully I connected with our local hair celebrity who also makes YouTube videos, and he’s entertaining and informative (see his “how to cut your hair at home” video here).  In the meantime, my friend Ter tried this hair mask and said it fixed her “unfixable” hair, so I think I’ll try it too. And just in … thank you @kevinchristopherhair for this tip on covering our grays!!

#4. Drugstore beauty items worth every penny

It’s no secret, I adore beauty products, sometimes splurgy ones. However, a less expensive item can be just as good. For example, Cetaphil is the face cleanser my dermatologist recommends, and Derma E is an excellent, reasonably priced eye cream. And, I’m never without a Burt’s Bees chapstick (peppermint) — I have one in the car, one by my bed, and one in my handbag.

#5. Charlotte Tilbury love

I love Charlotte Tilbury, and I’ve used these products for several years now. For instance, the Magic Cream, which acts like a primer and a moisturizer, is one of my all-time favorites. The Magic Eye Rescue gets amazing reviews, and it’s a nice base before applying foundation. There are other cult favorites, like the infamous Pillowtalk lipstick and the Pillowtalk blush that are still best sellers  — try this iconic brand now!

1. Kidman’s Kiss lipstick | 2. Magic Cream | 3. Magic Eye Rescue | 4. Pillowtalk lipstick and Lipcheat pencil | 5. Pillowtalk eye palette | 6. Magic away concealer | 7. Sheet mask | 8. Pillowtalk blush | 9. Eye palette | 10. Airbrush flawless finish powder

#6. We should all invest in nail products

Since we’re all confined to our homes, that means no more manicures. I found myself searching how to remove shellac at home, but by the time I found the answer I had picked it all off!  I’m trying this OPI Nail Envy, this cuticle remover and this oil cuticle balm. I’ve also wanted to check out the brand Smith & Cult because I absolutely adore their nail polish colors, so now’s the time! Self-manicures (and pedicures) are actually kind of relaxing, so this might be a nice way to de-stress.

#7. Perfume is a nice indulgence right now

I’m always on the lookout for a new scent to share with you. The most recent addition is Jo Malone Peony and Blush Suede – it smells amazing!! Even while home lately, I’ve been applying the lotion, and it’s a welcome little splurge. My girlfriend just purchased Byredo Gypsy Water, and I have this new one in my own shopping bag. Saving these for a day when I’d like a little treat!

#8 Vitamin C Serum is something we should all use nightly

According to my friend Dr. Lauren Boudreaux, using a Vitamin C Serum is something we should all use nightly (I wrote about it here)(I wrote about it here). It’s a bit of a splurge, but it gets great reviews. Dr. Lauren recommends the one below, so try it! It’ll make a real difference for your skin.
