Cardigan comeback: 5 styles to try right now

The cardigan comeback: 5 easy styles

Cardigans have always been a wardrobe staple, but in recent months they’ve been showing up all over the style set, proving that the cardigan is THE sweater to own right now. Whether it’s long, cropped, embellished or oversized, this staple is back. Recently, Katie Holmes stepped out in the now-famous Khaite cardigan with a matching bralette. Worn casually off her shoulders with simple denim, the photo quickly went viral, solidifying that this sexy, button front sweater is a trend to follow. Buyer beware …  if you’re not careful you can end up on the frumpy side, which can add a few unwanted years to your look (well, that might be a little dramatic, but you get the idea). We all love cardis, so check out these styles below and pick up a couple of new ones!

Street style inspo – how the style set are wearing cardigans

#1 Vince cardigans

These splurge, but worth-every-penny cardigans are some of my absolute favorites.  Vince always does it right with small details that make these sweaters luxurious and timeless.  This shorter cardigan just arrived the other day, and it’s the first time in a long time a shorter style by Vince has been in stores.  And we love it! This longer style is perfect styled back with everything you own, and this cardigan with a tie waist adds definition which looks really nice over a dress or skirt.  Splurging on a Vince cardigan is worth it!

#2 J.Crew Juliette cardigan

These best-sellers are a little more like a jacket, and work with basically everything in your closet.  I’ve styled mine with a graphic tee, over a dress, and with my favorite white cotton shirt.  I rarely suggest this …but owning this staple in TWO colors wouldn’t be such a bad idea! You’ll wear them all the time.

#3 Duster cardigan

I recently purchased this duster cardigan in light beige, and it has been very versatile so far.  The best part is it comes in petite sizing — which is rare, but sometimes necessary for my 5’1 frame.  I highly recommend purchasing the petite size if you’re 5’4 and under because this cardigan runs on the longer side.  See other favorite duster cardigans here and here.

#4 shorter cardigans

Shorter cardigans have always been around, and until now I’ve not been a fan.  However, the fashion girls have been wearing them tucked into high waisted denim, or paired with a skirt like Kylie (I know I’m her mom, but so what?), and I’m excited to give this look a try.  The colors are really pretty, and you can’t go wrong with either of these styles!

Everlane Re-cashmere cardigan (available here as well)

Made of 60% recycled cashmere and 40% merino wool, these cardigans are easy to wear.

The jeweled buttons are such a pretty detail, and the colors are so good, I’m not sure which color to choose!!

#5 ATM cashmere cardigan

Emily Wright and Susie Wright

Susie: ATM cardigan, graphic tee, Mother denim, Jagger shoe | Emily: Free People cardigan, graphic tee, AG denim

Another splurge but talk about the perfect cardigan.  I wrote about them here.  They work with everything from dresses to denim, they’re super soft and the perfect weight. You only need one!
