The 5 coats you must have for Fall

Back in the early nineties, fresh out of college, I landed my first job as a coat buyer for Nordstrom.  Two days later, I was off to New York to preview coats for the Fall season. It was an exciting time, experiencing New York in the 90’s, and I loved every minute of it. And, of course, that was where I developed my love of coats and jackets!

Probably one of the MOST IMPORTANT pieces to have in our wardrobes is a good coat and jacket. I always tell my friends and clients: you can never have too many! From lighter weight wool jackets (like the one I’m wearing above) to a classic trench to a heavier weight coat, there are many options — both affordable and splurge. Keep in mind, when you’re out and about town, running errands, picking up kids, attending sporting events, going out for dinner – everyone sees you in your jacket, so sometimes it matters less what’s underneath. Make it stylish and practical if need be, and don’t be afraid to purchase several!

#1 Lighter weight wool sweater/jacket

If you choose a lightweight style similar to the one I’m wearing in the above photo, trust me — you’ll wear it over and over again. I’ve had this cashmere version for three years, and it’s a classic that’s still popular. I even wore it this summer to a beer fest with a t-shirt and jeans on a cool night!  This one is almost identical, AND it’s on sale! There’s also this J.Crew sweater/blazer style available here.  It’s the one Meghan Markle wore to the US Open, I wrote about it here!

#2 Classic wool coat

Investing in a classic wool coat that will last for years to come is a good decision. Not too heavy and not too thin, you can wear a wool coat from early fall into early spring depending on where you live. It’s no secret how much I love this Gucci coat, but there are some more affordable options too!

#3 Puffer coats

Everyone needs a puffer! The perfect weekend coat, it’s ideal for running around town with booties and your favorite cozy sweater.  Find one you love and I’m positive you’ll wear it all the time. This Moncler velvet is super cool, and check out this velvet copy for a fraction of the price!  See more Moncler inspired (affordable) versions here and here.

#4 trench coats

Stylish and unique trench coats are having a moment this fall thanks to JW Anderson and this highly sought after style! Whether you go for something classic like this or trendy like this Victoria Beckham I’m lusting over, a trench coat is perfect for most of the year.  Style it with a tee and denim, or over a dress, and you’ll look very put together!

#5 wrap coats

Max Mara cashmere coat

There’s something so elegant about a wrap coat! This style is timeless, sophisticated and really easy to wear.  It’s another style that stands the test of time.  Max Mara, an Italian brand known for luxury, has been producing their iconic coats since the 50’s. And luckily for us, there are some amazing options available, presumably inspired by this brand.  And if Max Mara isn’t in your budget, this Ted Baker is always a favorite, and this classic camel style is a great option too!
