Are skinny jeans on their way out?

Are skinny jeans on their way out?

Move over skinny jeans, there are new styles to try to freshen up the most important wardrobe staple of all:  denim!! Considered to be the hardest working parts of our outfits, it should be the first place to consider an update.  Why?  Because your denim needs it to be right in order for outfits to come together!  Your jeans need to fit correctly (not too loose and not too tight), they should hit at the correct length, and ideally the wash and the silhouette should be current.  Thankfully, denim trends last for several seasons. (Read more on denim trends here)  But this Spring, there are changes — more so than in previous seasons.

Are skinny jeans on their way out?  While it’s hard to imagine (yes I’m still wearing mine), I don’t think skinny jeans are going away just yet.  However, I do think it’s time to make room for new styles that are ruling the runways and are being seen all over Instagram, and in the closets of stylish influencers. Right now straight leg styles and wider-leg crop denim are becoming the preferred choices.

Keep reading and I’ll show you street style inspo, as well as current styles I’ve either tried on myself or advised friends and clients to buy.  I’m also including best sellers that get five star reviews.

High rise straight leg

This is the seasons favorite style, and pretty much looks great on everyone.  Think Levi wedgie; a lighter wash, crop straight leg.  Favorite brands include Levi’s, Frame and AG.  I love a blouse tucked in, with a great belt like this one or this one.

High rise crop flare

I find this style to be flattering on most everyone.  It goes with every style of shoe, from a sneaker to this season’s barely there sandal.  The best brands are Mother, Frame and Madewell.

wide leg denim

There are several versions of this style, and I’ve found the ones that are skinner through the legs are the most flattering — try this Paige style, or this Madewell.  Top brands include Paige, Madewell and Frame.

Details that make a difference

Try button fly denim, seen everywhere from your beloved skinnies to the favorite Veronica Beard crop flares.

Frayed hems are still popular, and so are side stripe details, like this Mother pair I have my eye on.

In terms of washes, the preferred choice is a washed out light blue denim.  It’s perfect for spring and looks great with black jackets and tees.
